Brand X is an antihypertensive medication that selectively blocks angiotensin receptors to reduce blood pressure. Discover in-depth information on the pharmacology, prescribing, warnings, and more.
Mechanism of Action
Brand X competitively inhibits angiotensin type 1 (AT1) receptors resulting in arteriolar vasodilation and reduced aldosterone secretion to lower blood pressure.
Pharmacology
The inhibitory effects of Brand X on AT1 receptors results in significant antihypertensive activity by reducing systemic vascular resistance without increasing heart rate or cardiac output. Peak effects occur 3-6 hours after oral dosing.
Pharmacokinetics
Brand X is rapidly absorbed reaching peak plasma concentrations in 1-2 hours. Bioavailability is about 40-60%. It is extensively metabolized in the liver via CYP450 enzymes. Excretion is primarily fecal with a elimination half-life around 9-12 hours.
Contraindications
Brand X is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or angiodema. It should not be coadministered with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or renal impairment.
Warnings
Brand X rarely causes hypotension after the first dose. Angiodema has been reported on rare occasions. It is not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Adverse Reactions
Most common adverse events are dizziness, hyperkalemia, increased creatinine levels.
Dosing and Administration
The recommended starting dose is 20mg once daily. Titrate up to a max dose of 80mg daily. Dose adjustment needed for renal or hepatic impairment.
